Drawing is the basis of Franciscus’ work. However, his drawings do not often form part of his exhibitions and remain in the studio and in the sketchbook. An exception to this was the solo show where Franciscus was asked to show a completely different side of himself. With ink on paper he made a series of direct drawings with Romanticism as the main source of inspiration. With a number of quickly applied layers of Indian ink, large works were created on paper. These drawing became the first inspiration for the Back to Black paintings.
