Mural of Bling Madonna at Curaçao

Jun 06, 2016

In 2015 Rienus and I worked 4 months as artists in residence at Instituto Buena Bista on Curaçao granted by the Mondriaan foundation. We made a series of portrait photography but in the project description was also a mural planned. The location we desired was on a wall of JJIC, former GOG, a penitentiary for juvenal delinquents that is right next to the premises of the Institute in Willemstad.

One day before we left directors and initiators of IBB Tirzo Martha and David Bade came with the fantastic news that the Minister of Justice saw and liked our design and agreed to commission to make the mural. We were especially delighted because this was the first time that in their 10 years existence a project intitiated by the IBB was financed by the Curaçao government.
Exactly a year after Rienus and I returned I flew back with brushes and paint. Two weeks later Rienus joined to help with finishing touch and realised the graphic work for the a poem that is, on our request, written by one of the inmates on the subject Mother and Child. In one month the piece was painted on the wall, size approx. 4 meters high and 20 meters long, with the assistance of my invincible personal assistant and teacher at IBB MJ Franco Zapata and six very motivated students of the institute.
